Summary

This release summarises the diagnoses in 2019 registered by NDRS covering all registerable neoplasms (all cancers, all in situ tumours, some benign tumours and all tumours that have uncertain or unknown behaviours)

Cancer diagnoses increased in 2019

There were 327,174 new cancer diagnoses in 2019, on average 896 a day, which is 3,724 more than 2018.

Males higher than females

There were more cancers diagnosed in males (169,599) than females (157,575).

The rate of cancer diagnoses is higher in areas with higher deprivation

Males and females diagnosis rates in the 20% most deprived areas of England are at least 16% higher than for those in the 20% least deprived areas.

Least deprived males have higher rate of cancer diagnoses than the most deprived females.

Males living in the least deprived quintile had a higher rate than females living in the most deprived quintile (649 versus 621 per 100,000 people).

Rates of cancer death fell in 2019

Rates of death from cancer fell by 1% in males and 2% in females compared 2018.

On 1 October 2021, responsibility for the National Disease Registration Service (NDRS) transferred from Public Health England (PHE) to NHS Digital. NHS Digital is the data controller for this data. The National Cancer Registration and Analysis Service (NCRAS) as part of the NDRS is still responsible for collecting data on patients with cancer in England and continues to produce the Cancer registrations statistics publications.
