Reports

2013

Data quality and completeness report: 2010 registrations - The National Cancer Data Repository (NCDR) holds merged data from the eight English cancer registries for cancers diagnosed in the years 1990 to 2010. The purpose of this report is to compare the completeness and quality of coding of the main data items held in the NCDR for head and neck cancers diagnosed in 2010.

Radiotherapy treatment in DAHNO 2010/11 - National Head & Neck Cancer - The purpose of this report is to assess whether DAHNO is under reporting radiotherapy treatment or not, and if so, whether there are any variations by cancer site and cancer network. To do this the cancers included in the latest DAHNO dataset were matched to the RTDS dataset and all radiotherapy treatment found were linked to the DAHNO cancer record. The proportion of DAHNO cases that had no radiotherapy record on DAHNO but did have a record on RTDS were then calculated.

2012

Major Surgical Resections in England: Head & Neck cancers – This report examines differences in the proportion of major surgical resections - for head and neck cancer patients diagnosed between 2004 and 2008 - by sex, age and socio-economic deprivation. It also considers variations in geographical patterns, by looking at major surgical resection percentages and rates for Cancer Networks based on patients’ postcode of residence.

Travel times and distances to radiotherapy centres for Head & Neck cancer patients in England (2006 - 2008) – This report describes the travel times and distances to radiotherapy centres in England for patients with head and neck cancers (excluding thyroid cancer) diagnosed between 2006 and 2008. The aim is to identify areas of the country with longer travel times and distances.

2011

Head and Neck Data quality and completeness in the National Cancer Data Repository: 2008 registrations – The National Cancer Data Repository (NCDR) holds merged data from the eight English cancer registries for cancers diagnosed in the years 1990 to 2008. The purpose of this report is to compare the completeness and quality of coding of the main data items held in the National Cancer Data Repository by cancer registry, for head and neck cancers diagnosed in 2008.

Head and Neck Cancers Data Quality Report: Radiotherapy and Chemotherapy Data – Comparison of radiotherapy and chemotherapy data in the National Head and Neck Cancer Audit (DAHNO), Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) and the National Cancer Data Repository (NCDR).

Head and Neck Cancers Data Quality Report: Follow Up and Outcomes Data – The purpose of this report is to describe the quality and quantity of any follow-up and outcomes data available within the DAHNO audit.

Head & Neck cancer in England: Relative survival by age and stage – The purpose of this report is to compare the survival of patients whose data are recorded in two separate databases and identify whether one cohort of patients experience better survival than the other - the DAHNO (Data for Head and Neck Oncology) system, which supports the National Head and Neck Cancer Audit, and the National Cancer Data Repository (NCDR) which holds merged data from the eight English cancer registries for cancers diagnosed in the years 1990 to 2006.

Profile of Head and Neck Cancers in England: Incidence, Mortality and Survival – This report is the first output resulting from the collaboration between the National Cancer Intelligence Network’s Site Specific Clinical Reference Group for Head and Neck Cancers and the Oxford Cancer Intelligence Unit which is the lead cancer registry for head and neck cancers.

Data Briefings

2014

The impact of cancer service guidance on surgical workload volume: head and neck cancer perspective - The publication of NICE Head and Neck Cancer Guidance in 2004 was followed by a shift towards more centralised and specialised head and neck cancer surgical services in England.  A significant proportion of patients, however, are still treated in low workload hospitals.

2012

Thyroid cancer – trends by sex, age and histological type – This briefing examines trends in the incidence, mortality and one-year relative survival in England by sex, age and histological type for people who were diagnosed with, or died from, thyroid cancer between 1990-94 and 2006-10.

Potentially human papilloma virus (HPV) related head and neck cancers– The purpose of this NCIN data briefing is to examine the rates of new (incident) cases of potentially HPV-related head and neck (H&N) squamous cell cancers (SCCs) and comparison of H&N SCCs incidence in England between 1990 and 2008.

2010

Oral Cavity Cancer – The Oxford Cancer Intelligence Unit (OCIU) prepared this data briefing that looks at the time trends in 1-year and 3-year relative survival for men and women in England diagnosed with oral cavity cancer between 1990-92 and 2005-07.
